OPPOSITION: Local residents (Northern Lakes Area Concerned Citizens Association)
BACKGROUND: VeraSun Energy attempted to build an ethanol refinery in Milford, Indiana beginning in the summer of 2006. Shortly after the plant had been announced in 2006, the Northern Lakes Area Concerned Citizens Association organized a fierce campaign against the proposed plant. Residents argued the proposed location was dangerous, would increase truck traffic and posed a threat to the environment and quality of life.
On March 26, 2007, VeraSun dropped its plans amid continued delays caused by local residents' opposition of the plant. At the time, it was unclear whether county officials would support the permitting of the plant.
According to County Commissioner Brad Jackson, "VeraSun was evaluating several sites for ethanol production, including Milford, and they were looking at overall community support, local corn supply, transportation, utilities and other facets and have simply found other sites more suitable for their facility."
