OPPOSITION: Local citizens, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians
BACKGROUND: In 2003, the developer proposed building a $700 million, 425 mega-watt coal plant on Manistee Lake. In response to local opposition from citizens concerned about water and air pollution, as well as the improper development of coastal resources, Manistee denied the local land use and special use permits needed to move forward. In response, the developer sued the City and others for $59 million. The lawsuit was dismissed in October 2005.
