STATUS: In progress with opposition
OPPOSITION: Local residents
BACKGROUND: Appalachian Power submitted an application in June 2008 to construct an $11 million, 1.4 mile 138 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line and substation to serve customers in Roanoke County and the City of Roanoke, Virginia. The project was built to meet growing electricity demand in the Roanoke area.
The project is opposed by Neighbors Opposed to Power Encroachment, a citizens group consisting of area neighborhood residents. The group cites various reasons for its opposition, including obstructed views, noise, unsightliness, health risks, and diminished property values.
Sunscape was to be completed in June 2010, but as of September 1, 2010, construction was still ongoing.
