LS Power/ Dynegy’s Midland Power Plant, MI

STATUS: Canceled

TYPE: Coal

OPPOSITION: Sierra Club

PROSPECTS: Unlikely

BACKGROUND: The developer proposed a 750 megawatt plant near Midland, Michigan at a cost of $1.9 billion.  The local community supported the proposal.  However, opposition by national special interest groups such as Sierra Club and by Michigan Governor Granholm to all coal plants delayed construction.  Regulatory uncertainty and economic difficulties led to the project’s cancellation in May 2009.
