STATUS: In progress
OPPOSITION: Environmental groups including Little Lake Ranch and Hunting Club
BACKGROUND: The $14 million project obtained a Conditional Use Permit on May 6, 2009 to pump water to Coso’s geothermal plant despite opposition from environmentalists who worried that groundwater pumping into Coso’s geothermal plant would harm the environment in the surrounding area. Coso experienced “four years of legal battles” before finally getting the green light. Coso points out that the project will provide jobs and that the water is essential for supplementing their geothermal reservoir and keeping it in operation.
When completed, the Hay Ranch Water Project will boost renewable energy production at the Coso geothermal resource and allow geothermal energy to serve an estimated 50,000 additional California homes.
