STATUS: In progress with opposition
TYPE: Clean coal
OPPOSITION: Sierra Club
BACKGROUND: In 2007, M&M Energy announced plans for the Great Lakes Energy Research Park, a $3 billion complex consisting of a 750 mega-watt IGCC power plant on the site of a former petroleum refinery in Alma, Michigan. In December 2008, the developers announced a change in design. In February 2009 a coal moratorium executive order was issued by former Michigan Governor Granholm. To date, the developer has yet to apply for any permits.
Sierra Club lists the project on its “Stopping the Coal Rush” as a “victory.” However, there is no evidence Sierra Club, or anyone else, has ever taken action in opposition to the project.
