Dunning Mountain Wind Project, Bedford County, PA, Iberdrola Renewables

STATUS: In progress, with opposition

TYPE: Wind

OPPOSITION: Local residents; Save Our Allegheny Ridges (SOAR)

PROSPECTS: Indeterminate

BACKGROUND: Iberdrola’s plans to build 25 windmills stretching about four miles in parts of Bedford, East St. Clair, King and South Woodbury townships.  Iberdrola’s 48-megawatt wind project represents an investment of over $100 million in an area. If the project meets certain deadlines, it will be eligible for and will take advantage of Stimulus funds for renewable energy projects. It was estimated to be operational by late 2011

Local residents have been vocal in expressing concern over the environmental impact of the project; noise; decreased property value; and aesthetic impacts.  SOAR has been advocating for protection for the timber rattlesnake, endangered bats and the golden eagle

As of March 2009, environmental assessments on migrating birds and bat populations were under way, as was a wildlife habitat assessment for endangered species.
