STATUS: In progress with opposition
BACKGROUND: Duke Energy plans to build a 160-turbine wind farm in Searchlight that would generate enough electricity to serve more than 100,000 homes. The project would cost approximately $600 million dollars and would generate 200 megawatts of electricity. The project would employ hundreds of workers during the six to eight months of construction. Once completed, it would provide permanent employment for 15 workers. The project could become a key source of property tax revenue for state and local governments.
Critics of the project say the towering wind turbines will destroy views and upset their lifestyle. Others are concerned that the turbines pose a threat to birds. Despite protests by residents, the Clark County commissioners approved an application from Duke Energy, to move forward with the project in August 2010. However, the company scaled back the project size by 55 percent in response to community concerns.
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement may be out by the end of November 2010, and construction is expected to begin by late 2011.
