OPPOSITION: Sierra Club, Meigs Citizens Action Now
BACKGROUND: In 2005, the developer filed applications for approval of an approximate 600 megawatt integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant in Meigs County, Ohio. In 2006, it submitted an air permit application. By 2007, project costs, originally estimated at $1.2 billion, had increased to $2 billion. In February 2009 AEP announced that "the state of the economy has placed plans for the plant on temporary hold,” but the company's vice president said it is still very interested in the project and "nothing has changed."
Project opponents challenged the plant based on its alleged environmental and development impact, including CO2 emissions. Sierra Club lists the site as a “victory” on its “Stopping the Coal Rush” website.
