STATUS: In progress
TYPE: Wind Project
OPPOSITION: Local residents
BACKGROUND: Horizon Wind Energy, LLC has proposed a wind farm project named Alabama Ledge Wind Farm located in Genesee County. The plant would generate 80-megawatts of electricity enough to power more than 24,000 New York homes.
Some residents who oppose this project believe it is not only dangerous and risky to have the turbines so close to their homes, but that the project will have a negative impact on their property values. Others are concerned about the impact on wildlife.
In April 2010, Horizon applied for a second amended application for the project. In May 2010, a public meeting was held to discuss these changes, which included reducing the number of turbines from 56 to 40; installed Capacity; and turbine location. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) had already been prepared, but since changes have been proposed to the project, the Town Board required the company to complete a supplemental DEIS.
